The 12 Rashis

बारह राशियाँ

9 min readFoundations

The zodiac belt — a 360-degree band of sky through which the Sun, Moon, and planets appear to travel — is divided into twelve equal segments in Vedic astrology. Each segment spans 30 degrees. Each segment is a Rashi (राशि).

The twelve Rashis are the foundation of Jyotish. Every planet in your chart sits in one of them. Every house is coloured by one of them. Understanding the Rashis is like learning the alphabet before reading a book.

But here is something worth noting: the Rashis in Vedic astrology are not identical to the zodiac signs you may know from Western astrology. Jyotish uses the Sidereal zodiac, which tracks the actual positions of star constellations. Because of a gradual astronomical shift called precession, the Vedic and Western zodiacs are currently about 24 degrees apart. So your Vedic Rashi may differ from your Western sign.

The Organising Principles

Before we walk through all twelve, it helps to understand three classification systems that Jyotish uses to group the Rashis.

Element (Tattva). Each Rashi belongs to one of four elements: Fire (Agni), Earth (Prithvi), Air (Vayu), or Water (Jala). Fire signs are driven and action-oriented. Earth signs are practical and grounded. Air signs are intellectual and communicative. Water signs are emotional and intuitive.

Quality (Guna). Each Rashi is Chara (cardinal/movable), Sthira (fixed), or Dwisvabhava (dual/mutable). Chara signs initiate. Sthira signs sustain. Dwisvabhava signs adapt.

Ruling Planet (Swami). Every Rashi has a planetary lord. The Sun and Moon each rule one sign. Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn each rule two signs.

The Twelve Rashis

1. Mesh (मेष) — Aries Element: Fire. Quality: Chara. Ruler: Mangal (Mars).

Mesh is the first sign — the starting point of the zodiac. It carries the energy of initiation, courage, and direct action. Mesh-dominant charts often show people who lead from the front, sometimes impulsively but always with conviction. Mars gives this sign its warrior spirit: decisive, competitive, and unafraid of confrontation. The challenge for Mesh is patience. The gift is fearlessness.

2. Vrishabha (वृषभ) — Taurus Element: Earth. Quality: Sthira. Ruler: Shukra (Venus).

Where Mesh charges forward, Vrishabha settles in. This is the sign of stability, comfort, and sensory appreciation. Ruled by Venus, Vrishabha values beauty, material security, and the pleasures of the physical world — good food, music, art, and nature. The fixed quality makes this sign deeply loyal but also resistant to change. Vrishabha builds slowly, but what it builds tends to last.

3. Mithuna (मिथुन) — Gemini Element: Air. Quality: Dwisvabhava. Ruler: Budha (Mercury).

Mithuna is the sign of the mind in motion. Ruled by Mercury, the planet of intellect and communication, this sign thrives on information, conversation, and variety. Mithuna-dominant individuals are often quick-witted, curious, and capable of seeing multiple sides of any issue. The dual quality makes them adaptable but sometimes scattered. Mithuna learns by talking, reading, and asking questions — endlessly.

4. Karka (कर्क) — Cancer Element: Water. Quality: Chara. Ruler: Chandra (Moon).

Karka is ruled by the Moon, the most emotionally significant Graha in Jyotish. This sign governs the inner world: feelings, memories, home, family, and the instinct to nurture. Karka-dominant charts often show deep emotional intelligence and a strong attachment to roots and tradition. The cardinal quality means Karka does not just feel — it acts on those feelings, often through protecting and caring for others.

5. Simha (सिंह) — Leo Element: Fire. Quality: Sthira. Ruler: Surya (Sun).

Simha is the only sign ruled by the Sun. It carries the energy of self-expression, authority, and creative confidence. The Sun represents the Atma (soul) in Jyotish, so Simha-dominant charts often have a strong sense of personal identity and purpose. This is a sign of natural leadership, generosity, and a desire to be seen and respected. The fixed quality gives Simha tremendous willpower — and sometimes stubbornness.

6. Kanya (कन्या) — Virgo Element: Earth. Quality: Dwisvabhava. Ruler: Budha (Mercury).

Kanya applies Mercury's intellect to the material world. Where Mithuna gathers information for its own sake, Kanya analyses, organises, and refines. This sign is associated with service, health, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. Kanya-dominant charts often show people who improve systems, solve practical problems, and hold themselves to exacting standards. The challenge is perfectionism. The gift is discernment.

7. Tula (तुला) — Libra Element: Air. Quality: Chara. Ruler: Shukra (Venus).

Tula is Venus expressing itself through relationship and aesthetics rather than material comfort. This sign seeks balance, harmony, fairness, and partnership. Tula-dominant charts often show a refined sense of justice and a natural ability to mediate between opposing viewpoints. The cardinal quality means Tula actively creates harmony — it does not simply wait for it. The challenge is indecision when both sides seem equally valid.

8. Vrischika (वृश्चिक) — Scorpio Element: Water. Quality: Sthira. Ruler: Mangal (Mars).

Vrischika is Mars turned inward. Where Mesh fights external battles, Vrischika wages internal ones — confronting hidden truths, buried emotions, and the deep mysteries of existence. This is the sign of transformation, intensity, and psychological depth. Vrischika-dominant charts often show people who are drawn to research, investigation, and anything beneath the surface. The fixed water quality creates tremendous emotional tenacity. Vrischika does not let go easily.

9. Dhanu (धनु) — Sagittarius Element: Fire. Quality: Dwisvabhava. Ruler: Guru (Jupiter).

Dhanu is the sign of the seeker. Ruled by Jupiter, the planet of wisdom and expansion, this sign is oriented toward meaning, philosophy, higher learning, and dharma. Dhanu-dominant charts often show a love of travel (physical and intellectual), a natural optimism, and a drive to understand the big picture. The dual quality makes Dhanu adaptable in its pursuit of truth, sometimes restless, always looking toward the horizon.

10. Makara (मकर) — Capricorn Element: Earth. Quality: Chara. Ruler: Shani (Saturn).

Makara is Saturn's cardinal sign — disciplined, ambitious, and deeply practical. This sign understands that meaningful achievement requires time, structure, and sustained effort. Makara-dominant charts often show people who take responsibility early, build institutions or careers methodically, and value tradition and hierarchy. Saturn's influence makes Makara patient and resilient, but also prone to rigidity or excessive seriousness.

11. Kumbha (कुम्भ) — Aquarius Element: Air. Quality: Sthira. Ruler: Shani (Saturn).

Kumbha is Saturn expressing itself through the intellect and collective. This is the sign of innovation, humanitarian concern, and independent thinking. Where Makara builds within existing structures, Kumbha questions those structures. The fixed air quality gives Kumbha strong convictions and the persistence to stand by unconventional ideas. Kumbha-dominant charts often show people oriented toward social causes, technology, or systems-level thinking.

12. Meena (मीन) — Pisces Element: Water. Quality: Dwisvabhava. Ruler: Guru (Jupiter).

Meena is the final sign — the place where the zodiac cycle dissolves and prepares to begin again. Ruled by Jupiter, Meena carries the energy of spirituality, imagination, compassion, and surrender. This sign is deeply intuitive, often drawn to music, art, healing, and the mystical. The dual water quality gives Meena extraordinary empathy but also a tendency to absorb the emotions of others. Meena-dominant charts often show a soul that is seeking something beyond the material.

How the Rashis Work in Your Chart

Knowing your Sun sign or Moon sign is a starting point, not the destination. In a Vedic birth chart, every planet occupies a Rashi, and that placement colours how that planet expresses itself. Mars in Karka behaves very differently from Mars in Makara. Venus in Mesh is not the same as Venus in Tula.

Beyond the planets, the Rashi that falls on each house cusp determines the lord of that house — and this is how a Jyotishi traces connections between different areas of your life.

The Rashis are the stage. The planets are the actors. The houses are the scenes. Understanding all three together is what makes Jyotish so precise — and why a conversation with a learned astrologer can reveal layers that a simple sign description never will.
